EDWARDSVILLE — The City of Edwardsville officially broke ground Monday, April 20, 2026, on Goshen Commons, a new $3.95 million pedestrian-friendly public park planned for the heart of downtown.
The project will transform one block of St. Louis Street between North Main Street and Second Street, along with the adjacent courtyard, into a vibrant public gathering space designed for both everyday use and special events.
Goshen Commons will feature green space with trees and various plantings, an expansive gathering area, walkways, seating areas, shade structures, festoon-style lighting, a video screen, restrooms, and game tables. City leaders say the park is intended to serve as a welcoming destination for residents, visitors, and community events year-round.
The site has long been home to the Land of Goshen Community Market, and once construction is complete, the popular seasonal market will return to its longtime home. During the 2026 season, however, the market will temporarily relocate to City Park at 101 S. Buchanan.
Edwardsville Mayor Art Risavy said the new park will be a major addition to the downtown district and a boost for local businesses.
“Goshen Commons will be such an incredible complement to our wonderful downtown and our local businesses,” Risavy said. “This park will be used and appreciated by so many people on a daily basis in addition to those who come for the many events we envision happening here.”
The project received a significant financial boost from State Rep. Katie Stuart, who helped secure a $2 million member-directed initiative through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources aimed at supporting economic vitality in the region. Goshen Commons was first announced in August 2024 alongside Stuart’s funding initiative.
Construction is expected to continue through the coming months, with the park anticipated to open for public use this fall.
S.M. Wilson & Co. is serving as the project’s general contractor, while Lochmueller Group is handling engineering services and Arcturis is serving as project architect.
