SIUE Flute Choir Invited To National Convention In Oregon

EDWARDSVILLE – The flute students of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) have been invited to perform this summer at the National Flute Association Annual Convention in Portland, Oregon, an opportunity that organizers say comes with high travel-related costs and has prompted a call for donations to help students attend.

The SIUE flute choir plans to present “a unique and exciting program featuring music written exclusively for low flutes,” according to information provided by Dr. Shelly Monier, SIUE’s flute professor.

The performance is also set to include “the world premiere of a new work by Dr. Shelly Monier.”

The invitation is described as “an incredible honor and a testament to their hard work and artistry,’” but “attending the convention comes with significant expenses, including travel, lodging, and registration fees,” and that “these costs can be a barrier for many of our dedicated student musicians.”

Supporters are being asked to contribute to reduce those costs.

“Your donation will directly assist in reducing the financial burden on these students, allowing them to represent SIUE on a national stage, share their music, and gain invaluable professional experience,” the materials say.

“Please consider contributing to help these talented musicians get to Portland,” the appeal adds. “Every gift—no matter the size—makes a meaningful difference.”
