Neale R. Fadden, 88, of Belleville, IL, born November 12, 1937, in Sterling, IL, died Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the Dammert Center at the Benedictine Living Community at the Shrine, Belleville, IL.
Neale grew up as a northern Illinois farm boy, an upbringing that shaped his pragmatic approach to life and his steady belief that what truly matters are the things that endure over time. He carried a sharp intellect and strong academic drive, launching into higher education at the University of Illinois and Illinois State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics. He began his career teaching high school in Henry, Illinois, before transitioning to a role that would define his professional life as a mathematics instructor at Belleville Area College, where he spent the full arc of a 40-year career shaping bright minds and preparing students for their futures. Early in his move to Belleville, he met his beloved wife, Betty, and together they built a life rooted in steady partnership over 57 years of marriage. Betty, a young widow with three children at the time, and Neale together formed a family to which they soon added a fourth child. In those early years, Neale was appointed as a Fulbright Lecturer, taking his young family to Cornwall, England for a yearlong teaching exchange, an adventure that became part of the fabric of their shared story. Across the decades, he made choices that consistently placed family above career ambition, striving to be present as a husband and father. He took deep pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, delighting in watching them grow and flourish, always content to be the stable foundation beneath their flight.
Neale found joy in quiet routines and thoughtful pursuits. He was a voracious reader, especially drawn to thrillers, mysteries, and suspense novels, always enjoying the challenge of a story that kept him thinking. He loved a good bowl of ice cream, a competitive game of cards, especially contract bridge, and could often be found working through crossword puzzles or sudokus with focused determination. He followed the markets with interest, approaching investing as both a hobby and an intellectual challenge. He was also drawn to the arts, particularly music, serving as president of the Belleville Community Concerts Association, enjoying the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and singing in the church choir. He appreciated time spent at beloved places like the St. Louis Zoo and the Missouri Botanical Garden, and remained a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. His humor was a dry, understated wit that often slipped by unnoticed at first, only to land a moment later. Through it all, he held to a conviction about life: to build and invest in what is meaningful, to choose wisely, and to place value on what will endure long after what is new or flashy fades.
Neale was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Rose Fadden, nee Shively, who died on September 20, 2023; a daughter, Lisa Dye; a son, Gerald Fadden; a grandson, Justin Fadden; his parents, Elmer “Wayne” and Edna, nee Hardy, Fadden; a sister, Sheila (David) Clardie; and two brothers-in-law, Joseph and John (Kimmie) Shively.
