

GRANITE CITY – Granite City Community Unit School District #9 partnered with the Granite City Tree Advisory Board to mark Arbor Day on Monday, May 4, 2026, with tree-planting events at Frohardt Elementary School and Grigsby Elementary School in Granite City.
The celebration, which had been scheduled for Friday, April 24, 2026, was postponed because of rain, according to the district. Activities began at 9:30 a.m. at Frohardt Elementary School, followed by a luncheon, and continued at Grigsby Elementary School at 1 p.m.
The district said nine trees were to be planted at each school for a total of 18. The City of Granite City, Illinois, Mayor Mike Parkinson was scheduled to read a proclamation during the event.
The Granite City School District said it partnered with the Tree Advisory Board for a “special Arbor Day celebration” at Frohardt Elementary School.
Granite City’s Mayor Parkinson read “an official Arbor Day proclamation before volunteers and students planted five trees together.
