CHARLESTON – Triad’s 4×100-meter relay team of Ava Gallia, Addie Field, Izzy Stein, and Sophia Schardan won the state championship and set a state record with a time of 46.87 on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
Gallia said returning to the relay this season was a goal she worked toward.
“I was in it last year, and I worked all spring to be in it again,” Gallia said. “It was great to win the title in the relay.”
Field, the No. 2 runner, said she focused on her leg of the race and the exchange.
“I am the No. 2 runner, and it felt good on my leg,” Field said. “I knew I had to work my leg in and have a good handoff, and I did.”
Stein, the No. 3 runner, said she felt confident once the baton reached Schardan.
“Once Sophia got it, she just took off, and I knew she had the race,” Stein said.
Schardan said she believed the team would win and credited its preparation and coaching for the record-setting result.
“There was no doubt,” she said. “I watched the entire relay, which I normally don’t do. I knew we were going to win.
“I was so pleased to get the state record. It goes to show you how much hard work we put into it. We also have a great coach in Adam Nelson. That is how we got the record, all the workouts and the coaching.”
