John “Matthew” Eckmann, 45, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
Born on July 3, 1980, in Rockford, Illinois, Matt was the beloved son of John H. and Linda K. (Jones) Eckmann. Throughout his life, Matt was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, and the genuine warmth he shared with everyone he met. He never knew a stranger and was always willing to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or words of encouragement to those in need.
Above all else, Matt cherished his family. He was a devoted father, loving son, caring brother, proud uncle, and loyal friend whose presence brought comfort and laughter to countless lives. His greatest happiness came from spending time with those he loved, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Matt found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved being outdoors, whether camping beneath the stars or casting a line while fishing. He expressed his creativity through sketching and playing his guitar, and he never missed an opportunity to enjoy a good horror movie. Halloween was his favorite holiday, a reflection of his fun-loving personality and appreciation for life’s unique moments.
Matt was preceded in death by his niece, Kayla Bierschwal, maternal grandparents, Norma and Lou Crook, great-grandparents, Viola and Clarence Scrivner, and paternal grandparents, John and Bernice Eckmann.
In addition to his devoted parents, Matt is survived by his cherished daughter, Teagan Eckmann of Staunton, Illinois; his loving sister and brother-in-law, Amy and Billy Bronaugh of Granite City, Illinois; and his beloved nieces and nephews, Kaiden Shiadek, Sofia Bronaugh, Christopher Green, Lillian Green, Jordan Bronaugh, and Jared Bronaugh. He also leaves behind extended family members and many dear friends who will deeply miss his presence.
A visitation celebrating Matt’s life will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois, with funeral services beginning at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Jarad Corzine will officiate. Matt will be laid to rest at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
Though his time here was far too short, Matt’s love, laughter, and generous spirit will remain a lasting gift to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
