Illegal Fireworks Face Scrutiny In Belleville Holiday Push

BELLEVILLE – The Belleville Police Department is urging residents to celebrate Independence Day safely and legally over the holiday weekend in Belleville, reminding the public that most consumer fireworks are prohibited under Illinois law and city ordinance and that extra officers will be on patrol.

In a public safety message posted ahead of the Fourth of July, Belleville Police said aerial fireworks, firecrackers, bottle rockets and Roman candles are prohibited within the city unless properly permitted. The department said novelty items such as sparklers, smoke devices and party poppers are generally permitted.

“As we celebrate our nation’s independence with family, friends, and neighbors, the Belleville Police are encouraging everyone to have a fun and safe Fourth of July,” the department said.

Police also urged residents to “know and follow Illinois law and the City of Belleville ordinance,” and warned people never to use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The department said children should be kept under close adult supervision and asked residents to be mindful of “neighbors, veterans, pets, and those sensitive to loud noises.” Police also reminded the public to avoid impaired driving and to “plan for a sober ride home.”

“Extra officers will be on patrol throughout the holiday weekend to help keep our community safe and help ensure everyone enjoys a safe holiday,” the department said.
