Downtown St. Louis Shooting Leaves Man Critically Injured

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Metropolitan Police District 4 detectives are investigating after a 34-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting that followed a dispute with a 35-year-old man he knew, authorities said on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026. The dispute began in the 2700 block of Howard and continued into Downtown St. Louis, where gunfire erupted near Olive and Tucker.

A preliminary investigation found the 34-year-old man, driving an Infiniti, pursued the 35-year-old man, who was driving a Toyota Camry. Near Olive and Tucker, the 35-year-old stopped, got out of his vehicle and began firing at the Infiniti, authorities said.

The 34-year-old was struck multiple times in the leg and wrist.

SLMPD SWAT officers were nearby at the time, handling an unrelated traffic stop involving a reckless driver known to be involved in takeovers and preparing to tow the vehicle. Bullets ricocheted near the officers, forcing them to take cover, and one round struck the hood of a marked police SUV.

Police said the injured man attempted to flee north on Tucker, but his vehicle struck the center median, became disabled, and caught fire near Tucker and Locust. SWAT officers responded immediately and took the shooter into custody. A firearm was recovered.

The 34-year-old was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Investigators believe the shooting was not random and that the two men knew each other before the incident.
