EAWR Football Team Gets Ready To Travel North To Coal City For The Playoffs

WOOD RIVER – The East Alton Wood River Oilers Football team will take a long bus ride up highway 55, for 223 miles, to Grundy County to take on the Coal City Coalers in the first round of the Class 4A Football Playoffs on Saturday.

The Oilers are led by Senior running back Seth Slayden and Senior Quarterback Miguel Romero. Slayden broke Travis Williams 20-year record with 1,519 rushing yards in his career. Williams had 1,508. According to MaxPreps Slayden is averaging 168.0 rushing yards a game.

” Our line is right by my side all game long and after every play they are picking me up and they make it for us.” Oiler Running Back Seth Slayden said

The Oilers went 6-3 this season and 3-2 in the Cahokia Mississippi Conference. They tied Roxana in the Conference. Two of the losses were by very few points. The Oilers dropped a heartbreaking to Roxana 35-27 in week 8 then a 14-12 loss to Red Bud in week 9. The other loss came in week 5 to conference co-champion Breese Central 21-6.

2018 was the last year the Oilers made the playoffs where they lost 47-8 to Carlinville. That year the Oilers finished 6-3 and 6-0 in the Prairie State conference.

The Coal City Coalers also comes in with a 6-3 record but have a 5-2 record in the Illinois Central Eight Conference. The Coalers three losses came from conference foe Reed Custer (58-14) also conference opponent Wilmington (17-7) and non-conference opponent Morris.
