John Galinski

John Louis Galinski, age 79, of Collinsville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. John was born on January 1, 1947, in Granite City, Illinois, the son of the late Peter and Catherine (Novak) Galinski.

John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, carrying the values of honor, courage, and commitment throughout his life. On November 22, 1969, he married the love of his life, Helen Mooshegian, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Madison, Illinois. Together they built a beautiful life and shared fifty-six years of devoted marriage.

John dedicated many years of hard work as an ironworker at Granite City Steel before retiring in 2001. Outside of his career, he embraced life fully and enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting. He also shared his passion for sports and mentorship as an amateur hockey coach for many years, leaving a lasting impression on the young athletes he guided.

Above all, John’s greatest joy in life was his family. He cherished every moment spent with them and took great pride in being a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in spoiling them whenever he could. John had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, and brought warmth and happiness to those around him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Pat Silvas.

He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-six years, Helen Galinski of Collinsville, Illinois; his loving sons, John (Cherie) Galinski of Troy, Illinois, and Steven (Susan) Galinski of O’Fallon, Illinois; his dear siblings, Peter Galinski of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Kathy Swift of Granite City, Illinois; and his proud grandchildren, John Galinski, Jason Galinski, and Xavier Galinski. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who will forever cherish his memory.

In celebration of John’s life, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville, Illinois, with Father Rob Johnson officiating. John will be laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, with full military honors conducted by the United States Marine Corps.
