ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Prosecutors in St. Louis County have filed charges against a second 19-year-old suspect in the February shooting death of Lionel Steed, who was killed during an alleged attempted robbery in the 11400 block of Maridosa Trail, authorities said.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on Monday, April 13, 2026, issued charges against Jonathan Phillips Jr., 19, of the 5600 block of Hiller Place in St. Louis. Phillips is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and attempted robbery in the first degree, according to a statement dated Tuesday. He is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond with no 10% option and is in custody at the St. Louis City Justice Center. A booking photo was not available.
“Please note that charges are merely accusations, and Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law,” the statement said.
According to the probable cause statement, the alleged killing occurred “on or about February 4, 2026,” in St. Louis County. It says Phillips, “acting with another,” attempted to forcibly steal car keys from Steed and that Steed “was shot and killed” during the attempted robbery. The statement says the murder and attempted robbery were committed with the aid of a deadly weapon, “a firearm,” and that the defendant was identified through surveillance and witnesses.
St. Louis County Police Department Crimes Against Persons detectives are handling the investigation, authorities said.
Phillips is the second suspect charged in the case. On Monday, March 23, the prosecutor’s office issued charges against Ta’Rez Roberson, 19, of the 2000 block of Jenner Lane in St. Louis. Roberson is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, two counts of attempted stealing — motor vehicle/watercraft/aircraft — and attempted robbery. He is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond with no 10% option, authorities said.
In Roberson’s probable cause statement, prosecutors alleged that on or about Feb. 4, Roberson, “acting with another,” attempted to appropriate motor vehicles in the possession of two individuals identified as D.S. and M.T. It also alleges that Roberson, “acting with another,” attempted to forcibly steal Steed’s car keys and that Steed was shot and killed. The statement says Roberson “has admitted to the conduct.”
Police previously said officers from the North County Precinct responded at 5:06 p.m. Feb. 4 to a call for a shooting in the 11400 block of Maridosa Trail. Officers found an adult male with at least one gunshot wound, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Feb. 6, authorities identified the deceased as Steed, 36, of the 1600 block of Rosado Drive in St. Louis.
