GLEN CARBON — Father McGivney Catholic High School junior Omar Avalos has been named to the 2026 IHSA Class 2A All-State Team after leading McGivney at the plate during a 27-10 season under head coach Chris Erwin, the school announced.
Avalos led McGivney batters with a .519 average and a .636 on-base percentage. He also recorded 35 RBIs, 18 doubles, three triples, 35 stolen bases and 56 hits.
Erwin described Avalos as “probably our top player.”
Avalos is a Byron, Carlson, Petri & Kalb Male Athlete of the Month for Father McGivney Catholic.
“He was a junior, and now an incoming senior,” Erwin said. “He has committed to play at SIUE.”
Erwin said Avalos is “a really good outfielder” whose best qualities include being a “monster at the plate,” hitting “with both power and speed,” going “the other way,” being a “really strong defender” and being “really, really good on base paths.”
“He is great at taking extra bases; I think he will be a phenomenal player in college,” Erwin said. “He has the demeanor and skill set to be a tremendous player in his senior season and in college.”
Erwin also said Avalos has been “starting since freshman year.”
The school said the all-state recognition is “a testament to Avalos’ hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence both on and off the field.”
