Alton Fire Claims Life of Man and Dog in Early Morning Blaze


ALTON — The Alton Fire Department battled a fully engulfed blaze early Monday morning, Dec. 1, 2025, that claimed the life of one man and a dog, Alton Fire Department Battalion Chief Derrick Richardson said.

The blaze occurred around 2:30 a.m. Dec. 1 in the 900 block of Rixon in Alton, according to Richardson. Firefighters found the single-story structure fully involved upon arrival.

The Alton Police Department was on the scene at the fire, and the Godfrey Fire Protection District was called for additional manpower but did not participate in firefighting efforts, Richardson said.

Temperatures were in the 20s as crews battled the fire, Richardson added.

The State Fire Marshal and Madison County Coroner also responded to the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, with the fire marshal still present, Richardson said.

One relative was at the scene during the incident.

No further details about the victim have been released.
