Sandra S. Schmitt, nee Baker, 87, of Freeburg, IL, born February 19, 1939, in Galatia, IL, died Thursday, April 9, 2026, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, O’Fallon, IL.
Mrs. Schmitt was the owner/operator of Lakeside Campground and Fishing, along with her husband, Robert Schmitt. She enjoyed Bingo and Crocheting. Sandra was very family oriented. She was the true matriarch of the family and the “glue” that held it together.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, April (Durwin) Peterson; her parents, Charles and Viola, nee Ragsdale, Baker; and two brothers, Charles Baker and a brother in infancy, Brian Keith Baker.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert Schmitt, whom she married on March 1, 1957; a daughter, Tina Schmitt; two sons, Robert C. (Cindy) Schmitt and Jimmie (Vickie) Schmitt; 15 grandchildren; Valerie Schmitt; Christopher Huitrado; Cory Schmitt; Alyssa Schmitt (2 children); Nicholas (Nya) Schmitt (2 children); Matthew (Amanda) Ponder (4 children); Rebecca (Paul) Anderson (4 children); Malynda (Ben) Kistler (2 children); Jennifer (Larry) Houghlan (3 children); Elizabeth (Adrien) Kane (2 children); Amber (Jeff Talley) Schmitt (4 children); James Schmitt (1 child); Kimberly (David) Waln (4 children); Anthony (Samantha) Morak (4 children); and Heather Morak (3 children).
