SATURDAY, APRIL 18 PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS ROUNDUP

BASEBALL

CARROLLTON 13, STAUNTON 12 (8 INNINGS): Carrollton rallied back from an early 5-0 deficit to score six runs in the third, then scored twice in the fourth and fifth, and once in the sixth. Staunton came back to score six in the seventh to tie the game 11-11, forcing extra innings, and scored once in the eighth to take the lead. The Hawks scored twice in the home half of the eighth to pull out the win at home.

Carson Flowers led Carrollton with four hits and four RBIs, while Reed Schnettgoeke had four hits and two RBIs, both Wyatt Rose and Eli Cox had four hits each, and Jayce Steinkuhler had three hits and three RBIs. Finley Henson struck out five while on the mound.

The Hawks are now 7-5, while the Bulldogs drop to 10-8.

GRANITE CITY 18, SPRINGFIELD 7: Granite City scored in every inning but the third, hitting Springfield with four runs in the first, three runs in both the second and fifth, one run in the fourth, two runs in the sixth, and five more in the seventh to take the road win.

Timo Bradley led the Warriors with four hits and two RBIs, while Ben Wilson had three hits, including his first-ever varsity home run, and six RBIs. Tucker Kolb struck out four while on the mound.

Granite improves to 7-7, while the Senators are now 6-9.

ROCKWOOD MARQUETTE 11, METRO-EAST LUTHERAN 0: Marquette scored once in the first and third, seven times in the fourth, and twice in the fifth to take the win over visiting Metro-East in Chesterfield, Mo., in west St. Louis County.

Sammy Huber had the only hit of the game for the Knights, while Cooper Italiano fanned two on the mound.

The Mustangs are now 13-3, while Metro-East is now 6-7.

In the rest of the Saturday fixtures, Breese Central edged Mascoutah 2-1, and CBC defeated O’Fallon 8-2, and Freeburg swept a doubleheader from Piasa Southwestern 10-0 and 6-0. Three other games — Marquette Catholic at Collinsville, and two games in Paducah, Ky., Edwardsville vs. Owensboro, Ky. Apollo, and Edwardsville against the hosts, McCracken County — were rained out. Make-up dates will be announced at a later date.

BOYS LACROSSE

In the only game involving a local team on Saturday, Edwardsville lost at Chaminade College Prep Catholic in Creve Coeur, Mo. 16-4.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

In the only match on Saturday, O’Fallon won at home at the OTHS Panther Dome over Lindbergh of Sunset Hills, Mo. 2-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

There were only two matches that had area teams, and in them, New Lenox Providence Catholic defeated Belleville West 2-0, and Cor Jesu Academy Catholic of Affton, Mo., in south St. Louis County, dealt O’Fallon their first loss of the season 4-1.

SOFTBALL

In doubleheaders that were played on Saturday Quincy swept a pair from Alton 11-7 and 2-1, Belleville East swept Newton 9-5 and 6-5, and O’Fallon and Mascoutah split, the Panthers winning the first game 6-5, and the Indians coming back to take the nightcap 11-0. Two other games on the schedule — Rochester at Carlinville and East St. Louis at Peoria Manual — were postponed because of rain. There have been no make-up dates announced as of yet.
