
EDWARDSVILLE – Both Tyson Wampler and Nolan Vojak had three RBIs apiece in the game, while Carter Grote struck out four in two innings of relief work on the mound, as Edwardsville scored 10 runs in the opening inning, and went on to a 19-1 win over East St. Louis to sweep a doubleheader over the Flyers Wednesday night, May 6, 2026, at Tom Pile Field.
The double win over the Flyers allowed Edwardsville to improve to 9-1 in the Southwestern Conference, with two league games remaining, next week against Collinsville, and extend their current winning streak to six games in a row.
The Tigers started their first inning with one out, when Joel Fields was hit by a pitch, went to second on an error by the pitcher when his pickoff throw to first got away, went to third on a passed ball, and after Wampler walked, scored on a wild pitch to give Edwardsville a 1-0 lead.
Murphy then reached on a dropped fly ball in left field for another error, with Wampler going to second. Both Wampler and Murphy stole second and third, respectively, with Wampler scoring and Murphy going to third on the throw to the plate, making it 2-0. Natan Bukovac then walked, and Vojak doubled home two runs to make it 4-0 for the Tigers. A Parker Gill RBI single scored Vojak to make it 5-0, with Gill going to second on a passed ball, and Rhys Gierich walked to put runners on first and second. Gill went to third on a wild pitch, Gierich stole second, and both scored on Aiden May’s two-RBI single to left to make it 7-0 for the Tigers.
Nick Chiarodo doubled, with May going to third, and a sacrifice fly to left by Fields brought in May to make it 8-0, with Chiarodo going to third. Chiarodo scored on an RBI single by Wampler, then Murphy and Bukovac drew walks to load the bases, and Wampler scored on a passed ball to give Edwardsville a 10-0 lead before the inning ended.
Victor Miller led off the East Side second with a base hit, went to second on a ground out, took third when Daniel Crockett reached on an error by the second baseman, and the Flyers executed a double steal, with Crockett taking second, and Miller stealing the plate to make the score 10-1.
Gierich led off the Edwardsville second with a triple, and scored on a sacrifice fly by May to left, restoring the Tigers’ 10-run lead at 11-1. Chiarodo and Fields then reached on back-to-back errors, and both came in on a double to left by Wampler to make it 13-1. One out later, Bukovac and Vojak reached on another set of back-to-back errors, loading the bases, and Gill drew a walk to force in pinch runner Max McMichael to make it 14-1. Bukovac then scored on a passed ball to give the Tigers a 15-1 lead before the inning ended.
May and Sutton Leas drew walks to start the Edwardsville third, with May scoring on a passed ball, to make it 16-1, and after McMichael was hit by a pitch, Chiarodo scored on another passed ball, and Murphy doubled home McMichael to up the lead to 18-1. Grant Peterson reached on a dropped third strike, and Vojak singled home Murphy to make the score 19-1. The Flyers were retired in the fourth to give the Tigers the win 19-1, the game terminated by the 15-run rule.
Both Wampler and Vojak led the Tigers with two hits and three RBIs each, while Gill and May had a hit and two RBIs apiece, Murphy ended up with a hit and RBI, Gierich had a hit, and Fields drove in a run. Brady Hasquin started on the mound and was credited with the win, going for two innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits, walking one and striking out two. Grote pitched in the final two innings, allowing only one hit, walking none, and fanning four.
MonTeal Harper had two hits for the Flyers, while Miller had the other hit of the game. Miller started on the mound and was charged with the loss, going two-plus innings, allowing 16 runs, eight earned, on seven hits, walking eight and fanning one, while Harper went 0.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits, walking two and striking out two. Orlando O’Dell pitched the final 0.2 innings, not allowing a hit or run, walking none and fanning none.
Edwardsville is now 16-8, and hosts their annual Tiger Classic round-robin tournament, meeting Teutopolis Friday night at 7 p.m., then playing Chatham Glenwood at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and going against Highland at 12:30 p.m. After the tournament, the Tigers meet Collinsville in their final SWC series of the season next Tuesday at Collinsville, then host the return game next Thursday, and play at Columbia next Wednesday, all games starting at 4:30 p.m.
The Flyers are now 5-13, and are at Peoria Manuel Saturday at 1 p.m., then play at Springfield Lanphier May 16, also at 1 p.m., and play a doubleheader at O’Fallon May 21, with the first game starting at 4:30 p.m.
