Five Area Wrestlers Advance For A Chance To Win A State Title

CHAMPAIGN – The metro-east will have five area wrestlers that advanced tonight to the IHSA State wrestling championship round Saturday night.

Two brothers from Carlyle advanced to the final round. Preston, who is just a freshman  and his brother, a two time state champion and a junior  Tyson Waughel both will try for a championship Saturday night. 

Preston had a 5-2 decision over Anthony Alanis in the 1A 113 lbs class, and Tyson had a 15-0 tech-fall over Logan Robets. 

In the 1A 215 lbs weight class EAWR Drake Champlin advanced to the championship match with a 7-5 overtime win over Chris Peura. Champlin will face Noah Wenzel. 

In 2A Triads Colby Crouch advanced in the 126 lbs weight class with a 14-4 decision over Xavier Villalobos. 

Civic Memorial’s Bryce Griffin came into the match ranked  number one wrestler in the 157 lbs class in Illinois and he kept that rank when he had a 17-5 decision over Nicholas Cheshier to advance. 

Roxana’s James Herring lost a tough battle to Jaylen Torres 7-4. Herring now drops down to the wrestleback semi-final round.
